Lawmakers in the Wisconsin State Legislature recently introduced a bill to provide additional state funding to public and private schools that provide free meals to all students.

Under AB 754, introduced by Democrats, all schools participating in the National School Lunch Program and the federal School Breakfast program would be eligible to receive additional funding from the state to subsidize the cost of providing free meals.

Wisconsin does not currently have a universal school meals program. The School Nutrition Association (NSA) has championed universal free meals in schools and called for an increase in the reimbursement rate.

Wisconsin bill would limit local control over animal welfare

A Republican bill would bar local governments from implementing stricter rules than the state already imposes regarding animal welfare, the administration of medications and vaccinations and how animals are used at or after they leave a farm or facility.
